Selma native Lyn’Terrykah Peasant received the “Best Hairstylist Award” on Oct. 8 from a local newspaper in Selma.

“You’ve been nominated for best hairstylist and I’m like , I didn’t know that, Peasant said. Then, somebody else was like, you’re in the top three, I didn’t know that”.

Peasant said she was shocked of the win and would tell her younger self and younger girls who want to pursue a career in hair to stay motivated, dedicated and to know anything is possible.

“Nothing is too far out of reach, know that God holds all the power and all the glory. Just stay focused, stay positive and eventually all those things will lead up to success, Peasant said. Being yourself, loving yourself results in being who you are supposed to become. Success isn’t measured to money, success is measured by what God has for you.”

Peasant started doing hair in 10th grade and has now been doing hair professionally for eight years.

Peasant said she hopes girls interested in pursuing a career in hair, do it for the love of hair, beauty and for themselves.

“I started doing hair at home at my mom’s house and now I do have a shop located in Selma”, Peasant said.

Peasant’s beauty shop is called “Ooh La Lyns and is located on Washington Street.

The shop has been in business for over a year and Peasant said she offers hair services including wigs, units and extensions.
