Dealing with Multigenerational attitudes and life-changing cycles in Families

Okay.. so you read the title. Interesting huh? Well, let me tell you about me.

First , let’s start with my atmosphere. Tall trees winding side by side as the winds easily blows by. Red muddy dirt , houses spread apart but close enough in walking distance in portrayal of one word..

FAMILY..

We all have family. Big or small .. we all have them..

I’m 22. College student working on my degree and soon I will be degreed. But, let’s back up.

Growing up as kids , it’s like there was a blur on life . I mean life, life.. like the life we are exposed to now right?

Parents gave us money.. now we have to work and get our own money .. If we charged their credit card, now we have to go get our own credit. If you drove your mama’s car.. Now she’s ready for you to get your own car. Hard stuff , right? But, we are quote unquote adulting.

If there are any parents reading this, Adulting is a term that millennials and GenX people use. It replaces the old terminology of a.k.a “growing up”.

But do we really? Do we really get a chance to grow up? In my opinion, no. Because it’s like some parents stick their foot in halfway and back out half to stop the process of us doing so.

In my family , the phrase is “your not grown, Until you got your own”. I’m pretty sure some of y’all know it. But, what happened to that speech at 18, “you are a young adult now , your future is in your hands”. But in the same sentence they add you still have the limit of two options : School or Work. Only for years later to forget all that , and treat you like a child to hold you because they are scared of you flying.

Currently , in my life that’s me. Four months left in school. No kids just two degrees and me . But, one degree I can use for the long haul. I’m not stuck at home but I’m patiently waiting my turn.. I been in four cities in the course of six years since I’ve been out of High School to get jobs , continue school , do internships & etc.. But , everything’s paying off but one thing I would like the most is for my parents to understand it’s okay to let me fly my wings because I will do great at everything.. including life even though there will be some bumps in between . If you feel like I feel , and you are a college student and you find this relatable, share and tell others that you can make it out here and you are going to be successful no matter what.

P.s. parents we love but out of love we ask kindly that you let us go!
