SELMA – On June 10, A former student of William R. Martin Middle School came back to the school to give back to the students of Valley Grande by teaching a skill set she learned in college which is journalism.

Faith Callens is a recent graduate of the University of Montevallo where she studied Multi-media Journalism and landed her first official job in news being a city council beat reporter in April .

“ It is a such an honor being back here, said Callens. It feels bittersweet and I’m just thankful for the opportunity to teach a subject or a possible degree to kids that are interested in a field such as journalism.”

There were 12 students in each class.

Callens had a three-fold poster board displaying information about journalism and she also had electronic items such as a laptop, a camera and her camera accessories to show students what everyday journalists use.

Callens received a chance to speak at the Elementary School because of the school’s librarian Brenda Powell who thought Callens was very knowledgeable about her field.

“I wanted to expose the students to journalism, said Powell. I want them to know the importance of writing. I picked Faith because of her professionalism and her intellect. She’s also is a graduate of Dallas County High School and the University of Montevallo.”
